The importance of good network security has been highlighted in a new report that has revealed the cost of data breaches.

Symantec has found that it now costs companies £79 per record breach – up 68 per cent over the past five years – and negligence is still the main cause of problems, with employee or contractor mistakes accounting for more than a third (36 per cent) of the reported issues.

Problems caused by hackers shouldn't be underestimated either, with the report noting that there had been a two per cent increase in the number of direct attacks on organisations.

However, despite the cost-per-breach going up, the total cost to business actually went down between 2010 and 2011, suggesting that companies are better prepared for when breaches do occur and know how to handle the situation.
