EFM

Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) delivers flexible data connectivity over a choice of 2 copper pairs (up to 10Mbps) or 4 pairs (up to 20Mbps), with a minimum symmetrical speed guarantee of 2Mbps. It's an ideal replacement for legacy technologies, some of which are being retired or leased lines services.

EFM

EFM over copper pairs may not have been subjected to the same levels of hype that fibre-based products like FTTC and FTTP have had, but it's one of the most important innovations of recent times. It bridges an important gap between business grade broadband and higher speed, high bandwidth products.

The launch of EFM has been one of TalkTalk Business' most successful ever. Businesses need bandwidth, and whether it’s a larger company looking for a replacement for leased line or SDSL services without the higher cost of Ethernet or a SME requiring network capacity to grow, EFM is the perfect fit.

Not only is EFM keenly priced for businesses who are outgrowing their broadband connections, it's also highly resilient and suitable for business critical applications. That's because if one pair fails, the second, third or fourth pairs provide a failsafe capability.

And not only that, it's widely available to more than 80% of business premises in the UK and backed up by cast iron service guarantees that you just can't get with other products.

EFM from TalkTalk Business is a superior technology to that of our competitors, requiring fewer copper pairs without compromising on speed. Choose from up to 10Mbps over 2 copper pairs or 20Mpbs on 4 copper pairs, with a minimum symmetrical speed guarantee of 2Mbps. Put simply, compared to our nearest competitor we provide twice the bandwidth using half the number of copper pairs at significantly lower cost, to a wider geographical area.

TalkTalk Business EFM is an efficient use of existing, proven infrastructure. It uses multiple bonded copper pairs to deliver an Ethernet service.

Product Features

  • Choose from up to 10Mbps connectivity over 2 copper pairs or 20Mpbs on 4 copper pairs – cost effective because it's double the capacity of our competitors on fewer pairs.
  • Minimum speed guarantee of 2Mbps.
  • Symmetrical service.
  • 100% dedicated bandwidth, wholly uncontended, so service performance is not affected by other people using the same exchange.
  • Super-resilient connection due to pairs; should one pair fail, service continues over other pair.
  • Ethernet presentation simplifies edge CPE choices. There is no need for expensive ADSL modules, micro-filters or interface cards. Our service can be plugged straight into a firewall or other Ethernet device (Internet facing service only).
  • Simple pricing
  • Our NGN has more EFM enabled exchanges than any other competitor, providing you with greater reach.

Higher performance for critical apps

Businesses have become more reliant on their data connections and network performance to deliver business critical applications such as voice, video-conferencing and cloud services. EFM is an ideal upgrade from broadband and inflexible legacy services. End-users can enjoy business-grade service with greater speeds, symmetrical service, guaranteed bandwidth and higher resilience.

Future-proof Technology

Delivered over our Next Generation Network, EFM offers future-proof data connectivity for your business. It offers greater flexibility, scalability, compatibility and performance than legacy technologies such as SDSL and leased lines which is easy and straightforward to adopt.

Ethernet level performance

With EFM, your business can gain access to a super-resilient, higher bandwidth and uncontended service that terminates directly at your premises. Plus, since EFM is usually better value than older 2-10Mbps services, at a price you can afford, there is no need to jump to Ethernet connectivity or stay with lower performing broadband. EFM also comes with the levels of service commonly only known with large data connectivity services such as Ethernet.

Retail, hospitality and national reach

EFM can deliver speeds of up to 20Mbps as far as 4km from the exchange, so our natural home is the high street. With the reliability and built-in failsafes that multiple pairs of lines brings, EFM is an ideal solution for satellite and branch offices that need resilient connections for POS, centralised sales systems and always on access to online customer service tools.

This isn’t a coming soon message - EFM from TalkTalk Business is here today, and available in nearly twice as many exchanges as our nearest competitor. Right now we have over 2,050 EFM-ready exchanges and we plan to bring more than 600 more online by Spring 2012. That compares to just 720 EFM-enabled exchanges from our closest competitor.

Superior technology

It's not just the reach our Next Generation Network give us which makes it the right choice for EFM. It's a superior technology too. We can deliver twice the bandwidth using half the number of copper pairs.

With EFM from TalkTalk Business, you can receive up to 20Mbps using four pairs compared to 10Mbps over seven pairs from our nearest competitor – and benefit from all the cost savings that implies.

EFM is also a future-proof gateway into our Next Generation Network, which is available nationwide and designed from the ground up with converged cutting-edge technology at its heart. While our competitors continue the process of upgrading their infrastructure and migrating customers to new types of connection, moving from rival's SDSL or leased lines to EFM from TalkTalk Business is a natural path to a platform which is stable and scalable over time.
